There's a huge difference between understanding how something is done and actually doing it. To qualify for a minors team requires a lot of skill and a lot of practice. Qualifying for the majors is even harder.
But in sales, people are allowed to play wherever they want. Some who have little or no sales experience think nothing of approaching major clients. Sometimes they're wildly successful, and sometimes they give themselves (and the industry) a black eye. Similarly, some people with lots of experience still choose to sell to smaller accounts. It's all about where you decide to play...
So where are you playing? Majors? Minors? Little league? And how do your skills match up with the clients you've chosen to approach? Are you overqualified? If so, you might want to step up to the plate and start looking for a few major accounts to play with. Are you underqualified? If so, you may want to practice on smaller accounts and fine tune your skills as you work your way up to larger accounts. And if you're evenly matched with your clients, at what level is that taking place?
Today is a great day for a self-diagnostic. There is always something we can do to improve our skills, upgrade our client base and advance to the next level. Take a few moments today. Determine which league you're in and pick one action that will help to advance.
Then aim for the bleachers...
